A Journey of Impact, Learning, and Cultural Exchange

In June 2025, we successfully launched the first-ever “Trips with Purpose” journey under My Motherland, taking nine exceptional students to Zimbabwe for two weeks of cultural immersion, service, and adventure.

This trip was more than a journey — it was an experience that transformed everyone involved. The students embraced every moment: visiting schools, engaging in community projects, and discovering a new culture firsthand. Watching them grow through the experience was one of the most rewarding parts of the trip.

School Visits & Cultural Immersion

Our students had the privilege of visiting three schools:

  • Petra – Students interacted with peers, learned about Zimbabwe’s education system, and shared perspectives on school life in the U.S. and Zimbabwe.
  • Ensango Primary – Our group played soccer with local children and donated laptops and soccer jerseys, bringing joy and excitement to the community.
  • St. Lucy – Students witnessed the installation of a 5kV solar system with three 48V batteries, built and installed by Wellington graduate Pierre Cruse.

These visits weren’t just tours — they were opportunities to connect, exchange ideas, and understand the challenges and strengths of education in Zimbabwe.

Borehole Drilling Project – A Lesson in Resilience

One of our biggest goals was to drill a borehole to provide a reliable water source. Despite drilling down to 80 meters (262 feet), no water was found, and the drilling company did not return to go deeper as promised.

Though disappointing, this experience taught students the importance of perseverance and professionalism. We are already working on identifying a new drilling site and remain committed to bringing clean water to the community.

Solar Power Success at St. Lucy

A major highlight was the successful installation of solar power at St. Lucy school. Thanks to Pierre Cruse’s expertise, the school now has a functioning 5kV solar system and three 24V batteries, allowing them to power lights, charge devices, and run their printer. This project is already having a direct impact on education quality for local students.

Awarded Land for a Resource Center

During the trip, My Motherland was awarded a piece of land — a tremendous gift that will serve as the foundation for a community resource center.

Our vision:

  • Women will have a space for soap-making, beadwork, and bag production to sell for income.
  • A community garden will provide fresh produce and promote food security.
  • Men and youth will have access to skill-building workshops and income-generating projects.

This center will become a hub of empowerment, sustainability, and growth for the entire community.

Exploring Zimbabwe’s Heritage & Wildlife

Our journey also took us to three of Zimbabwe’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites:

  • Matobo Hills (Matopos): Stunning granite formations, ancient rock art, and a place of deep spiritual history.
  • Victoria Falls: One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World — breathtaking, powerful, and unforgettable.
  • Great Zimbabwe: The ancient stone city that once served as the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe.

Students also experienced cultural dining at The Boma Dinner, sampling mopane worms, drumming, and dancing. Our game drives gave us the rare opportunity to spot all of the Big Five, creating memories that will last a lifetime.

Queens with Wings – First All-Girls Track Meet

We proudly participated in the inaugural Queens with Wings all-girls track meet. The event was a celebration of young women’s talent, resilience, and leadership, empowering participants through sport and inspiring confidence and equality.

Special Thanks

This journey would not have been possible without the incredible dedication of:
Taylor Tomu, Joya Elmore, Miriam Chuma, Mr. Sibanda, Meeshelia Blackwell, and all of our Zimbabwean volunteers who worked tirelessly to make this trip a success.

Looking Ahead

We are already planning the 2026 Trip with Purpose (limited spots available!) and gearing up for our next bikeathon fundraiser to support our ongoing projects in Zimbabwe.

“Zimbabwe became a second home to me. I found lifelong friends and a family that welcomed me as their own. I went on new adventures and discovered more about myself along the way. We saw what other people’s lives were like and got to put ourselves in their shoes. Regardless of wealth and living conditions, everyone there was incredibly welcoming and exuded positive energy. I hope to continue making memories by visiting Zimbabwe with my motherland.” —Akira Böhm

I was able to help a school get access to reliable energy to charge their electronic devices, have lights at night and the ability to power their school printer.” – Pierre Cruse

“ My Motherland’s Trips with Purpose 2025 offered students a unique cultural exchange experience through sustainable service learning. Learning how to become a global citizen, adapt to a new environment, and give through service learning made this trip both meaningful and memorable. It is because of this trip that these students are building greater resiliency as they learn to adapt to new situations and make connections across the world. They are beginning to understand that how we show up in the world matters and I am incredibly proud of who they are all becoming. – Joya Elmore, Trip Leader

Quote for the kids: “One people, many colors.” 😂

“Our trip to Zimbabwe changed many of us for the better. It shifted our perspectives into new spectrums. From the moment I arrived in Zimbabwe, I felt surrounded by the spirit of resilience, beauty, and connection that left a lasting mark on my heart. This trip wasn’t just a vacation. It was a lesson in gratitude, humility, and the power of the human spirit. I am extremely grateful to have been part of this trip and can’t wait to visit again!” ~Maxwell Smith

“Our trip to Zimbabwe was unforgettable — not just because of the landscapes or adventures, but because of the people. Everywhere we went, we were met with kindness and a joy for life that didn’t depend on people’s circumstances or possessions. I learned that true wealth isn’t measured by your possessions, but rather by the way you treat others and the spirit you carry through life. I’ll never forget spotting a leopard on safari, standing on the edge of Victoria Falls with the mist hitting my face, or trying a mopane worm. I think I can speak for all of us when I say the experiences brought us closer together and changed the way we see the world.” ~ Taran Tien

“From the sweeping landscapes to the wild heart of the safari, Zimbabwe’s beauty left me speechless. Seeing a leopard in its natural habitat was a once in a lifetime moment that reminded me how magical our world really is.” – Sam Ard

“The summer trip to zimbabwe for my motherland impacted me in many ways but one of them outshined the rest: the trip opened my eyes to all the different things that I take for granted in everyday life and how different people live in other parts of the world.” – Grant McGill
